Injured man rescued off vessel by helicopter near Kodiak
A Filipino man injured in a fall while working on a container ship was taken by helicopter 115 miles north to Kodiak on Wednesday, said the U.S. Coast Guard.
The 56-year-old man fell about 10 feet on the Sea Land Charger and injured his head and right eye at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Coast Guard Petty Officer Diana Honings said.
The 958-foot vessel was about 550 miles from Kodiak when a medical review officer aboard the ship and a Coast Guard flight surgeon decided to medevac the man, she said.
A MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter and HC-130 Hercules aircraft helped safely hoist the injured man into the helicopter at about 9 a.m. Wednesday, authorities said.
At the time of the rescue, there were 8-foot seas and winds of 17 mph, said the Coast Guard.
The crew arrived in Kodiak 45 minutes later, and the man was transported to an Anchorage hospital, Honings said.
