Season's first big snowfall forecast for Southcentral Alaska
Here's hoping your studded tires are on: Southcentral Alaska is getting walloped with its first significant snowfall of the season.
Forecasters say a spell of clear and cold weather on the way means it is likely to stick -- at least for a while.
After Saturday's sleet and icy roads, temperatures have dropped, the National Weather service said Sunday.
"Those areas that have rain or freezing rain will swing to snow through Sunday afternoon and into the early evening hours," said Michael Kutz, a hydrometerological technican with the National Weather Service's Anchorage office.
The Anchorage Hillside can expect up to 6 inches of snow.
The rest of the city will see between 1-2 inches of accumulation, he said.
In the Matanuska and Sustna valleys, freezing rain will turn to snow this afternoon as well.
Areas north of Anchorage are also expected to see snow: 10 inches could fall in Chickaloon, Eureka and Glennallen by tomorrow.
There's already 5-6 inches reported on the ground in Talkeetna, Kutz said.
Snow will be possible in Anchorage through the evening into Monday afternoon, he said.
After that, the weather will turn clear and cold, he said.
Temperatures in the teens are predicted for West Anchorage.
In East Anchorage "it might get down next to that big old goose egg" of zero degrees, Kutz said.
Meanwhile, people are still remembering how to drive with white stuff on the ground.
Anchorage Police Department dispatchers say they are still receiving dozens of calls about traffic accidents.
