The incident occurred about 11:24 p.m. Tuesday at Mile 309.5 of the highway, about 100 miles south of Deadhorse. The spill was reported at 7:33 a.m. Wednesday to the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation. The truck, owned by Eggor Enterprises Inc., was hauling fuel from North Pole to Deadhorse on the North Slope when it went off the road into the ditch, according to an incident report posted by AEDC. Officials are assessing the extent of the spill and forming a response plan, which will involve removing contaminated snow and soil. The fuel spilled off the road onto the tundra, said Tom DeRuyter, spokesman for the AEDC division of spill prevention and response. He said the Department of Natural Resources will be involved in the cleanup. According to the incident report, while moose and caribou are commonly found in the area of the spill, no wildlife had been reported to be affected.
