Palmer prison guard arrested in contraband case

Two people, including a corrections officer, were arrested Saturday following an investigation into alleged smuggling of contraband items into the Palmer Correctional Facility, according to Alaska State Troopers. Troopers said 24-year-old Stephanie Cravens, a Department of Corrections officer, and 30-year-old Michael Freeman, of Anchorage, were arrested Saturday on warrants obtained with the help of the Office of Special Prosecutions and Appeals, a division of the Department of Law. An initial trooper report listed charges of bribery, receiving a bribe, and first- and second-degree promoting contraband, but did not specify which charges were being leveled at which defendant. Both were taken to Mat-Su Pretrial Facility, Cravens on $2,500 bail and Freeman on $10,000 bail.
